Bile Duct Cancer

What is the bile duct?
The bile duct is a long tube-like channel that carries bile from the liver to the intestine. Bile is a substance that aids in digestion by breaking down fats.

What is bile duct cancer?
Cholangiocarcinoma, another name for bile duct cancer, can develop in any part of the bile duct, usually the parts that are outside of the liver. This cancer is the most common reason for obstruction of the bile duct. Cancer of the bile duct could prevent the flow of bile. The cause of bile duct cancer is unknown. This form of cancer is most commonly diagnosed in people in their 60's and 70's.

Signs and symptoms of bile duct cancer
Bile duct cancer signs or symptoms can easily be mistaken for other medical conditions. Symptoms could include:
  • Jaundice
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Tiredness
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Itchy skin
  • Pale Stools
Traditional treatment options for bile duct cancer
There are various treatment options for bile duct cancer. It is not always possible to perform surgery for this disease due to the difficult location of the bile duct. However, surgery may be performed if the cancer has not spread beyond the bile duct. Other treatment options may include the use of toxic medicines.

Your doctor may suggest:
  • Surgery
  • Radiotherapy
  • Chemotherapy -Usrodiol, Doxil, Somatostatin, Gemzar, Cholestyramine, Pancrease
Radiation therapy may also be considered an option for some bile duct cancer patients. Radiation therapy is used in an attempt to destroy cancerous cells and cause a reduction in tumor size. It is most often used for bile duct cancer that has metastasized. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often performed simultaneously.
