Bone Cancer

General Information about bones
Bones are a hard tissue that connect and form the skeletal system. The purposes of bones are to provide support and framework to the soft tissues of your body, and to protect sensitive organs.

What is bone cancer?
Bone cancer is cancer that originates in the bone, but can also originate from another source in the body. A true bone cancer is referred to as a sarcoma and can develop any place in the body. Bone cancer that starts in the bone is rare, more common is metastatic bone cancer, which is cancer that has started elsewhere in the body and spread to the bones.

Signs and symptoms of bone cancer
Bone cancer can have various signs and symptoms depending on the size and location of the tumor. Symptoms could include:
  • Pain
  • Joint swelling and tenderness
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Weight loss
  • Anemia
Traditional treatment options for bone cancer
There are various treatment options for bone cancer. Traditional treatments can begin with shrinking the tumor, removal of tumor, or removal of affected body part. Additional treatment options include the use of toxic medicines.

Your doctor may suggest:
  • Surgery / Amputation
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation
Radiation therapy may also be considered an option for some bone cancer patients. Radiation therapy is used in an attempt to destroy cancerous cells and cause a reduction in tumor size. It is most often used for bone cancer that has metastasized. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often performed simultaneously.
