Breast Cancer

General information about the human breast?
The human breast is located at the upper vental region of the torso. It is comprised of connective tissue and fat. The breast also contains glands (mammary) which produce milk used to feed infants. Breasts are more commonly visible on the adult female. Male human beings have less prominent breasts.

What is breast cancer?
Breast cancer is a malignant cancer that forms in the cells and tissues of the breast. Breast cancer is more common in women and although rare, it does occur in men.

Signs and symptoms of breast cancer
A large number of people with breast cancer have no outward symptoms. Self examination is a common discovery of breast cancer. Initial symptoms could include:
  • a small painless lump
  • an area of thickened skin
  • dimpled skin
  • nipple retraction
  • breast swelling
  • redness or an enlarged underarm lymph node.
Traditional treatment options for breast cancer
There are various treatment options for breast cancer. Traditional treatments can begin with the surgical removal of the breast commonly referred to as Mastectomy. This surgical procedure is often followed by chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. Traditional treatment options could include the use of toxic medicines. Your doctor may suggest:
  • Surgery
  • Radiotherapy
  • Hormone Therapy
  • Chemotherapy
Radiation therapy may also be considered an option for some breast cancer patients. Radiation therapy is used in an attempt to destroy cancerous cells and cause a reduction in tumor size. It is most often used for breast cancer that has metastasized. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often performed simultaneously.

Death and mortality statistics for Breast Cancer

  • Breast cancer is the cause of over 500,000 deaths worldwide, which equates to almost 1% of all deaths
