Kidney Cancer

colon cancer
What are the kidneys?
The kidneys are a pair of bean shaped organs which filter impurities, excess water, and waste from the blood. This waste is then excreted from our bodies through urine. The kidneys are located beneath the ribs, behind your abdominal organs, one on each side of the spine.

What is kidney cancer?
Kidney cancer is cancer that forms in the tissues of the kidney. Malignant cells multiply and can form a tumor. More than one tumor can develop within one or both kidneys, although generally only a single tumor develops.

Signs and symptoms of kidney cancer
A large number of people with kidney cancer have no initial symptoms. Later stage symptoms could include:
  • Blood in your urine
  • Persistent back pain just below the ribs
  • Lumpy mass in the side or abdominal area
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
Traditional treatment options for kidney cancer
There are various treatment options for kidney cancer. Surgery and removal of the affected organ is the initial treatment of choice. Treatment options could also include the use of toxic medicines. Your doctor may suggest:
  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Cryoablation (freezing of the cancer)
  • Embolization (blocking blood flow to cancer)
Radiation therapy may also be considered an option for some kidney cancer patients. Radiation therapy is used in an attempt to destroy cancerous cells and cause a reduction in tumor size. It is most often used for kidney cancer that has metastasized. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often performed simultaneously.
