Laryngeal Cancer

colon cancer
What is the larynx?
The larynx is an organ in the neck for the purpose of protecting the trachea and generating sound. It is located just below the pharynx.

What is laryngeal cancer?
Laryngeal cancer is a common cancer of the head and neck, located in the larynx. This cancer of the voice box generally originates in the vocal cords. It is more commonly diagnosed in men than in women and has been linked to tobacco products and drinking alcohol.

Signs and symptoms of laryngeal cancer
Signs and symptoms of laryngeal cancer depend on the size and location of the cancer. Symptoms of this disease could mimic other less serious diseases.

Symptoms could include:
  • Sore throat or pain when swallowing
  • Cough that does not go away
  • Ear pain
  • Lump or mass in neck or throat
  • Hoarseness or change in the voice
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Bad breath
Traditional treatment options for laryngeal cancer
There are various treatment options for laryngeal cancer. Traditional treatments can begin with the removal of part of or all of the larynx. This surgery could result in loss of voice, the need for a tracheostomy, and insertion of a feeding tube into the abdomen. Treatment options could also include the use of toxic medicines. Your doctor may suggest:
  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
Radiation therapy may also be considered an option for some laryngeal cancer patients. Radiation therapy is used in an attempt to destroy cancerous cells and cause a reduction in tumor size. It is most often used for laryngeal cancer that has metastasized. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often performed simultaneously.
