What is the liver?
The liver is a large organ located in the upper area of your abdomen just under the right rib. The purpose of the liver is to aid in digestion, help filter and remove toxins from your blood, and destroy blood cells that have been used up.

What is liver cancer?
Liver cancer is a malignant disease which forms in the tissues of the liver. A few factors which can increase your chance of developing liver cancer are male gender, diabetes, and obesity.

Signs and symptoms of liver cancer
A large number of people with liver cancer have no symptoms in the early stages. As the liver enlarges, due to disease, symptoms become more evident and usually begin with pain. Symptoms could include:
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue / weakness
  • Jaundice
  • Bloating
  • Pain in the upper abdomen
Traditional treatment options for liver cancer
Treatment options for liver cancer vary according to the stage of the disease. Traditional treatments can begin with the surgical resectioning of the liver. Treatment options could also include the use of toxic medicines. Your doctor may suggest:
  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Radiofrequency ablation (high frequency heat applied to cancer)
  • Percutaneous ethanol (injection of alcohol into cancer)
  • Liver transplant
Radiation therapy may also be considered an option for some liver cancer patients. Radiation therapy is used in an attempt to destroy cancerous cells and cause a reduction in tumor size. It is most often used for liver cancer that has metastasized. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often performed simultaneously.
