Lung Cancer

colon cancer
General information about the lungs
The lungs are the main organs of the respiratory system. These organs are sponge-like, cone-shaped, and are located in the chest cavity. The purpose of the lungs are to provide oxygen to the body and to remove carbon dioxide from it.

What is lung cancer?
Lung cancer is a form of cancer that begins with malignant cell growth in the tissues of the lung. Common causes of lung cancer include long term exposure to tobacco smoke, including second hand smoke, asbestos exposure, and air pollution.

Signs and symptoms of lung cancer
Signs and symptoms of lung cancer are largely dependent on the size of the cancer and the invasion of the tissues. Up to 25% of people diagnosed with lung cancer have no early warning signs. Symptoms could include:
  • Weight loss
  • Shortness of breath / wheezing
  • Cough / coughing up blood
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Chest pain
  • Clubbing nails (deformity of fingernails)
Traditional treatment options for lung cancer
Lung cancer treatment and prognosis will be affected by the stage of cancer at diagnosis. There are various treatment options for lung cancer. Traditional treatments can begin with the removal of part of a lobe, the whole lobe, or the entire lung. Treatment options could also include the use of toxic medicines. Your doctor may suggest:
  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Radiofrequency ablation (high frequency heat applied to the area of cancer)
Radiation therapy may also be considered an option for some lung cancer patients. Radiation therapy is used in an attempt to destroy cancerous cells and cause a reduction in tumor size. It is most often used for lung cancer that has metastasized. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often performed simultaneously.
