Ovarian Cancer

colon cancer
What is an ovary?
An ovary is a female organ necessary for reproduction. Women have two ovaries, one located on each side of the uterus. The purpose of the ovaries is to produce eggs and hormones.

What is ovarian cancer?
Ovarian cancer is an abnormal, malignant growth that develops in a woman's ovaries. Risk factors for ovarian cancer include age, family history, hormone replacement therapy, and early adulthood obesity.

Signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer
In early stages ovarian cancer can be non specific and have no symptoms or mild symptoms, making it difficult for detection. Persistent or worsening signs and symptoms aid in diagnosis. Symptoms could include:
  • Pain / pressure in lower abdominal area
  • Back pain
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea / vomiting
  • Weight gain / weight loss
  • Unexplained changes in bowels
Traditional treatment options for ovarian cancer
Many women with ovarian cancer will undergo surgical treatment which could include the removal of one or both ovaries, fallopian tubes, the uterus, as well as other abdominal tissues. Treatment options could also include the use of toxic medicines. Your doctor may suggest:
  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
Radiation therapy may also be considered an option for some ovarian cancer patients. Radiation therapy is used in an attempt to destroy cancerous cells and cause a reduction in tumor size. It is most often used for ovarian cancer that has metastasized. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often performed simultaneously.

Death and mortality statistics for ovarian cancer
  • Generally diagnosed in women over 50 years of age
  • The 5 year survival rate for ovarian cancer is approximately 40%
