What is the prostate?
TThe prostate is a small gland of the male reproductive system. The main function of the prostate is to produce and store fluid that constitutes 30% of semen. It also aids in secretion during ejaculation. Women do not have prostates.
What is prostate cancer?
Prostate cancer is a slow growing malignant tumor of the prostate gland. It is the most common cancer of men and the second leading cause of cancer related death (lung cancer is the first leading cause of cancer related death).
The cause of prostate cancer is unknown. The chance of developing prostate cancer increases with age. Risk factors are thought to include, genetics, cigarette smoking, and environmental toxins.
Signs and symptoms of prostate cancer
A large number of people with prostate cancer have no symptoms for many years. The tumors are usually small and often are found during routine examination by your doctor.
Symptoms could include:
- Frequent nighttime urination
- Difficulty starting or holding back urine
- Weak or interrupted urine stream
- Painful, burning urination
- Difficulty in erection
- Painful ejaculation
- Blood or urine in semen
Traditional treatment options for prostate cancer
Treatment options vary for prostate cancer. Traditional treatments can begin with the removal of all, or part of the prostate and surrounding tissues. Treatment could also include brachytherapy (radioactive seeds) and cryotherapy (the application of extremely cold temperatures to the cancerous tissue). Treatment options could include the use of toxic medicines. Your doctor may suggest:
- Routine observation
- Surgery
- Chemotherapy
- Radiotherapy
- Additional drug therapy
Radiation therapy may be considered an option for some pharyngeal cancer patients. Radiation therapy is used in an attempt to destroy cancerous cells and cause a reduction in tumor size. It is most often used for pharyngeal cancer that has metastasized. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often performed simultaneously.
