Testicular Cancer

What are the testicals?colon cancer

A testicle is an egg shaped gland located inside a pouch of skin called the scrotum. Testicles (each male generally has two) are part of the male reproductive system. The purpose of the testicles is to produce and store sperm and male hormones (testosterone).

What is testicular cancer?

Testicular cancer is a cancerous growth caused by malignant cells that forms in the tissue of one or both testicles. It is most commonly diagnosed in men between the ages of 18 – 40.

Signs and symptoms of testicular cancer

A large number of men with testicular cancer have no symptoms in the early stage of this disease. This cancer is usually found accidentally by routine self exam. Symptoms could include:

  • Pain / heaviness in testicle
  • Shrinking / hardness of testicle
  • Swelling
  • Lumps in testicle

Traditional treatment options for testicular cancer

Common treatment options for testicular cancer include the surgical removal of the affected testicle. Treatment options could also include the use of toxic medicines. Your doctor may suggest:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy may be considered an option for some testicular cancer patients. Radiation therapy is used in an attempt to destroy cancerous cells and cause a reduction in tumor size. It is most often used for testicular cancer that has metastasized. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often performed simultaneously.

Death and mortality statistics for testicular cancer

  • Testicular cancer has a comparatively high cure rate
  • The relative five year survival rate for patients with testicular cancer is approximately 93%
