Vaginal Cancer

General information about the vaginacolon cancer

The vagina is the female organ of sexual intercourse. It is a long, muscular, tube-like passageway extending from the cervix to the vulva. The vagina is also referred to as the birth canal.

What is vaginal cancer?

Vaginal cancer is an uncommon, malignant disease that begins in the thin, flat cells of the tissues lining the vagina. Vaginal cancer is commonly diagnosed in women 60 years of age and older but is highly curable if detected and treated in early stages.

Signs and symptoms of vaginal cancer

Early warning signs and symptoms of vaginal cancer often go unnoticed. Symptoms could include:

  • Bleeding that is not period related
  • Pelvic pain
  • Vaginal lump

Traditional treatment options for vaginal cancer

Traditional treatment options could include surgical removal of the entire uterus, cervix, vagina, and ovaries. Other organs of the pelvic region could be surgically removed requiring artificial openings to be created for removal of waste and urine from your system. Treatment options could also include the use of toxic medicines. Your doctor may suggest:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Radio Sensitizers

Radiation therapy may be considered an option for some vaginal cancer patients. Radiation therapy is used in an attempt to destroy cancerous cells and cause a reduction in tumor size. It is most often used for vaginal cancer that has metastasized. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often performed simultaneously.

Death and mortality statistics for vaginal cancer

  • The relative five year survival rate for vaginal cancer is approximately 42%
