What is the colon?

The colon is a six foot section of the body's digestive system that moves waste material from the small intestine to the rectum. The rectum is at the end of the colon. The function of the colon is to extract fluids from waste material.

What is colon cancer?

Colon cancer, also referred to as colorectal cancer is believed to develop as a mushroom-like growth. These growths are most commonly small and non cancerous but can become cancerous in time.

Signs and symptoms of colon cancer

A large number of people with colon cancer have no symptoms in the early stages. Symptoms could include:

  • A change in the consistency of your bowels, lasting longer than a few weeks
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Blood in your stool
  • Abdominal pain
  • A feeling that your bowel isn't completely empty
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss

Traditional treatment options for colon cancer

There are various treatment options for colon cancer. The primary treatment for this disease is to surgically remove part of, or all of your colon. Surgery is usually followed by chemotherapy and radiation. Traditional treatment options could include the use of toxic medicines. Your doctor may suggest:

  • Surgery
  • Radiotherapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Additional drug therapy

Radiation therapy may also be considered an option for some colon cancer patients. Radiation therapy is used in an attempt to destroy cancerous cells and cause a reduction in tumor size. It is most often used for colon cancer that has metastasized. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often performed simultaneously.

Colorectal surgery could result in a permanent colostomy. This is where the remaining portion of your colon is accessed through an incision made in the abdominal area, thereby allowing fecal matter to exit through this opening and into a bag.
