What is neuroblastoma?

Neuroblastoma is a rare cancer most commonly diagnosed in early childhood, usually in children less than 2 years of age. Neuroblastoma presents itself in the form of a solid tumor in the sympathetic nervous system, but can also be found in the adrenal glands, neck, chest, or spinal cord. The cause of this disease is unknown but it is suspected that risk factors include smoking, alcohol consumption, and drug use during pregnancy.

Signs and symptoms of neuroblastoma

Initial signs and symptoms of neuroblastoma can be unclear and vague. Symptoms can be caused by the tumor pressing on surrounding tissues and organs more progressed depending on stage of cancer at diagnosis. Symptoms could include:

  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever
  • Bulging eyes / dark under eye circles
  • Lump in the abdomen, neck, or chest
  • Bluish lumps under the skin

Traditional treatment options for neuroblastoma

There are various treatment options for neuroblastoma. Sometimes before starting treatment, the doctor will develop a watch and wait attitude. This is to see how the disease is progressing. Treatment options could also include the use of toxic medicines. Your doctor may suggest:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Bone marrow transplant

Radiation therapy may also be considered an option for some neuroblastoma patients. Radiation therapy is used in an attempt to destroy cancerous cells and cause a reduction in tumor size. It is most often used for neuroblastoma that has spread to other organs. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often performed simultaneously.

Death and mortality statistics for neuroblastoma

  • Neuroblastoma accounts for 5 - 7% of all childhood malignancies
  • The five year survival rate for children under the age of 15 years of age is approximately 56%
