What is oral cancer?

Oral cancer, cancerous tissue growth, can begin in any part of the mouth or throat, including the tongue and lip(s). Risk factors for oral cancer include smoking, alcohol consumption, and frequent sun exposure.

Signs and symptoms of oral cancer

Oral cancer presents with early indicators. Changes can occur in the soft tissue of your mouth including the lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, roof and floor of mouth. Symptoms could include:

  • Loose teeth
  • Sore(s) on lip / in the mouth
  • Bleeding from the mouth
  • Lumps in your mouth / neck
  • Pain with swallowing
  • Earache

Traditional treatment options for oral cancer

Traditional treatments for oral cancer can begin with the removal of lesions. Surgerical procedures will depend on the staging of cancer. Surgery can involve soft tissue as well as bone. Treatment options could also include the use of toxic medicines. Your doctor may suggest:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Angiogenesis inhibitors

Radiation therapy may be considered an option for some oral cancer patients. Radiation therapy is used in an attempt to destroy cancerous cells and cause a reduction in tumor size. It is most often used for oral cancer that has metastasized. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often performed simultaneously.

Death and mortality statistics for oral cancer

  • Men develop oral cancer more than women
  • Frequently diagnosed in patients over 40
