What is the throat?

The throat is a five inch long muscular tube.  It is the front part of the neck below the chin and above the collarbone.  It provides the passage to the lungs and stomach.  The throat consists of the pharynx (the region between the mouth and the esophagus) and the larynx (the voice box), and the epiglottis (a flappy piece of skin considered a lid to cover and protect your windpipe from food and beverage).

What is throat cancer?

Throat cancer refers to cancerous tumors that develop in and around your lip, oral cavity, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, throat (pharynx) or voice box (larynx).  It is estimated that 24,000 people are diagnosed with throat cancer each year.  Half of those cancers occur in the pharynx. Risk factors include smoking and chewing tobacco, poor dental hygiene, Human Papillomavirus (HPV), excessive alcohol use, and exposure to asbestos.

Signs and symptoms of throat cancer

Signs and symptoms of throat cancer may include:

§  Cough

§  Changes in your voice, such as hoarseness

§  Difficulty swallowing

§  Ear pain

§  Lump or sore in the back of the mouth, nose, or neck

§  Sore throat

§  Weight loss

§  Bleeding from the throat

Traditional treatment options for throat cancer

There are various treatment options for throat cancer. Traditional treatments can begin with the removal of superficial tumors, part or all of your voice box, part or all of your throat, or a neck dissection. These operations could result in a stoma, tracheotomy, or learning to speak without your voice box.  Your ability to speak, chew, swallow, or breathe could be affected.

Your doctor may suggest:

·       Surgery

·       Radiotherapy 

·       Chemotherapy

·       Other drugs

Radiation therapy may be considered an option for some throat cancer patients. Radiation therapy is used in an attempt to destroy cancerous cells and cause a reduction in tumor size. It is most often used for throat cancer that has metastasized. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are often performed simultaneously.
