What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is an inflammatory joint disease that affects over 40 million people.  There are more than 100 different types of arthritis. The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis can affect anyone at any age, including children. The incidence of arthritis increases with age, but nearly three out of every five sufferers are under age 65. Arthritis affects the joints but can also cause problems with bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and any bodily organ or system.  This disease occurs when there is damage or inflammation to the cartilage of the joint and can be caused by injury, infection, inheritance, genetic defect, or abnormal metabolism.  Arthritis can affect men, women, children and adults.  Early treatment can prevent irreversible damage and permanent disability.
What happens when I have arthritis?
Arthritis affects the muscular skeletal system, usually at the joint where two or more bones meet. Bones have a smooth, tough tissue covering the ends of them which enables them to glide against each other during movement.  Arthritis is an illness that means inflammation to the joints and can cause pain and swelling in your joints.   Daily tasks during work or play such as getting out of bed, walking, cooking, and getting dressed can become painful and difficult to accomplish.  The number of people with arthritis is growing as our population ages.
